CSP Lib Dems vow to fight Post Office Closures in Cardiff and Cogan10.21.00am GMT Sun 28th Oct 2007
Leading local Liberal Democrats have slammed plans to close several Post Offices in Cardiff South and Penarth. The plans were due to be announced on Tuesday but have been widely leaked to the press. Amongst the most shocking plans announced have been the closure of both Post Offices in the community of Splott and the closure of Cogan Pill branch. Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson, Dominic Hannigan and Splott Councillor Gavin Cox have called on the Government to stop the closures. Dominic Hannigan said: "Labour have spent years running down the Post Office network; withdrawing government business and preventing people from accessing essential services in their local Post Offices. It is no surprise that they have brought branches to their knees. "We are determined that local Post Offices are invested in and kept at the heart of communities. Gavin Cox said: "This is absolutely disgusting, I really feel sorry for the people who use these Post Offices regularly. The fact that they are planning on withdrawing not one, but both of Splott's branches beggars belief. "We will fight this tooth and nail. I hope that Labour realise that they are not able to rip the soul out of our community and get away with it." Notes: 1. The Lib Dems have long campaigned to safeguard the future of Post Offices through more investment, freeing them from red tape and forcing the Government to safeguard branches.
